The newest and possibly most exciting wine in the collection, this is a blend of 80 % Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5 % Mouvedre, Counoise, and Clairette. Taking from different plots, to express many facets of terroir, some of the Vineyards are facing north and northeast, cooler sites which are blended with some of old Vine La Crau and others . The wine is whole bunch pressed, fermented in 50 % concrete egg tanks and 50 % Clay Amphora. This gives a unique expression with powerful aromas of savory dry thyme, lavender, marjoram, and lovage as well as dark mulberry, boysenberry notes. Lively and full of rich fruit on the palate with layers of rocks and smoke. Fine fruit tannins, great energy, and fresh acidity to lift the wine on the long finish.
"Family estate of 3 generations with Italian origins located in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. My grandfather Francis Usseglio came from Italy in 1931 where he settled in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In 1948 he took over a farm with his vines in a place called Piet Long and produced his first wine in 1949. Finally, it was in 1962 that he planted his first plot of vines in his own name in Terres Blanches. In 1963, my father Raymond, accompanied by my mother Danielle, took over and created Domaine Usseglio Raymond.
